I’ll be honest, this book was one roller coaster of a read. I laughed, I cried, I got angry, and it also made me question a few of the other emotions I experienced as well. I was recommended this book by my therapist, as she was reading it herself at the time. I looked it up on Amazon, loved the summary of the book (the beach locations were a definitely plus as well), and started reading it two days later. Once I started it, I couldn’t put it down. The characters are so relatable and real, and you constantly cheer them on throughout the book.
The book is set in both New Zealand and California. The main story takes place in sunny New Zealand, but there are many flashbacks throughout the book that take place on the beaches of California. The story is centered on two sisters and the emotional ride they endure as both children and adults. When Josie is killed in a tragic terrorist attack, her younger sister Kit’s world is destroyed. Fast forward 15 years later and Kit just happens to catch a TV new story about a nightclub fire over in New Zealand. While watching the story she spots her sister, supposedly dead, in the background. Is it really her? Or is it just wishful thinking?
I’m telling you, go to your favorite spot and read this book. It’s a life changer. And it’s so good. I know that’s such a terrible word to describe it, but it’s true. It’s emotional, dramatic, and will keep you on your toes until the very last page. And honestly if you love beach locations as much as I do, I promise you this book will take you there. Barbara O’Neal gives such wonderful descriptions of the beaches and the towns surrounding them!
